Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do volcanic landscapes keep changing?
The Big Idea
Volcanic landscapes are always changing! New rock arrives, old rock wears away, and life moves in. That's why scientists call this kind of land living, because it never stops changing.
New Rock Adds
Step one: new rock adds. Lava adds new rock, and the land grows taller or wider, one eruption at a time. Hot springs also leave colorful mineral crusts, which paint the ground.
Wear and Cover
Step two: wear and cover. Rain and rivers wear the rock away, carrying sand and gravel downhill. Plants and microbes cover it, turning bare fields into forests over the years.
Long Time
Step three: a long time. Over years, a bare black field becomes a forest. Over millions of years, a volcano can wear away completely, until only a small hill is left.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Lava adds fresh rock. Rain and rivers wear it away. Plants and microbes cover it. And time changes it all again, and again, and again.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The landscape tells a story if you check back often, so keep looking. Scientists call volcanic land living because it keeps changing. A bare black field can become a forest. An old volcano can wear away over millions of years.
