Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do minerals color rocks red or yellow near vents?

The Big Idea

Rocks near hot vents can turn red or yellow! Heat and water change the minerals in the rock. Geologists use those colors as clues.

Iron Rusts

Step one: iron rusts. Many rocks hold iron inside them, even if you cannot see it. When iron meets oxygen and water, it turns reddish, just like rust on a bike.

Sulfur Is Yellow

Step two: sulfur is yellow. Gases rising from vents can contain sulfur. Sulfur makes bright yellow crusts on the rocks around them, like a coat of paint.

Hot Water Stains

Step three: hot water stains. Hot water carries minerals up and leaves them behind in stains. Geologists read the colors as clues to what is happening underground.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Iron is hidden in many rocks. Oxygen turns it a rusty red. Sulfur gas paints rocks yellow around the vent. And geologists use the colors as clues.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Rust is the same chemistry as red volcanic rocks, just slower. Rust forms when iron mixes with oxygen and a little water. Sulfur crusts can smell like rotten eggs, so you will often smell them before you see them. Never touch or sniff close to a vent.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to put a steel nail or a piece of steel wool in a dish with salty water. Leave it for a few days, and do not touch the steel wool. Watch it turn reddish. What does it tell you about iron and oxygen?
