Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do black smokers exist on the seafloor?

The Big Idea

Black smokers are tall chimneys on the deep seafloor that puff out clouds of black water! They are found where hot rock lies close to the ocean floor. Let's see how they are made, one step at a time.

Seawater Seeps In

Step one: seawater seeps in. Cold seawater seeps down into cracks in the seafloor. Near hot magma, it heats up to over 350 degrees Celsius.

Metals Dissolve

Step two: metals dissolve. The super-hot water dissolves metals and sulfur from the rock. Then it rushes back up, because hot water is lighter.

Black Smoke

Step three: black smoke. When the hot water shoots into the freezing sea, the minerals turn into tiny black particles, a bit like smoke from a campfire. They look like smoke, and they build up into a chimney that keeps growing.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Seawater seeps down through the cracks. Magma heats it far past boiling. When it hits cold water, black particles appear. The particles pile up, and the chimney grows taller.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The water does not boil because of the great pressure. Black smokers sit about two kilometers or more beneath the surface. They are found along ocean ridges. Scientists visit them with robots and tiny submarines.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, hold a tea bag in a glass of warm water, and another in a glass of cold water. Watch the dark color rise from each one. Which plume moves faster, the warm one or the cold one? Hot water rises quickly, just like the vent water does.

Deep chimneys puff black water. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
