Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is geothermal energy useful?

The Big Idea

Geothermal energy is heat from inside Earth, and it is very useful! It can make electricity and warm buildings. It works day and night, all year long, rain or shine.

Hot Water Below

Step one: hot water below. In some places, hot underground water is not far below the surface, because the rock there is hot. Wells can carry its steam up to the surface.

Spin and Power

Step two: spin and power. At a power plant, the steam spins a turbine, which is like a big pinwheel. The spinning turbine makes electricity for homes and schools.

Warm Buildings

Step three: warm buildings. Hot water can also warm buildings directly, through pipes. It makes very little pollution, and it works day and night. Some cities even use it to melt snow on sidewalks.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, wells reach hot water underground. Steam rushes up to the surface. The steam spins a turbine. And the turbine makes electricity for lights and phones.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Iceland, New Zealand, and Kenya use a lot of geothermal energy, thanks to their volcanoes and rifts. Heat pumps can use gentle ground warmth almost anywhere, even where there are no volcanoes. Geothermal works in all weather, unlike solar or wind. It is a clean energy source that keeps going.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Blow gently on a paper pinwheel to see how moving air spins it, just like a tiny wind turbine. Steam spins a turbine the same way. Find three countries that use geothermal power on a map, with the help of a grown-up. Share what you find with a grown-up.
