Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a coffee percolator work like a tiny geyser?

The Big Idea

A coffee percolator works like a tiny geyser! Both use heat, a narrow tube, and trapped pressure. Let's see how they do it, step by step.

Heat Below

Step one: heat below. In a percolator, water at the bottom heats up until bubbles of steam form. In a geyser, water deep underground is heated by hot rock.

Up the Tube

Step two: up the tube. In the percolator, steam bubbles push hot water up a narrow tube. It sprays out over the coffee grounds, and then drips back down.

A Geyser Erupts

Step three: a geyser erupts. In a geyser, hot water is trapped in narrow underground channels. When some water spills out, the pressure drops, and the water flashes to steam and blasts the rest out.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Both machines need heat to start. Both use a narrow tube or channel. Both trap pressure that builds up. And then they spray hot water into the air.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Old Faithful, a famous geyser in Yellowstone, erupts about every 90 minutes, on average. Geysers are rare, and only a few places on Earth have them, because they need special underground plumbing. A percolator is just a kitchen version of the same idea. Never touch a hot percolator or a hot geyser pool.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch a stovetop percolator from a safe distance. Draw a picture of its tube, bubbles, and spray. Then draw a geyser the same way, with channels, steam, and spray. Never touch a hot percolator!

Outro

A percolator and a geyser use heat and pressure. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
