Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do plates help explain so many things about Earth?

The Big Idea

Plates explain so many things about Earth! Volcanoes, earthquakes, mountains, and ocean trenches all happen because plates move. One big idea explains a whole planet's puzzle, from tall mountains to deep trenches.

Three Boundaries

Step one: three kinds of edges. Plates can pull apart, push together, or slide past each other, and each does something different. Scientists call these divergent, convergent, and transform boundaries.

What They Make

Step two: what they make. Pulling apart makes ridges and rift valleys. Pushing together makes mountains, trenches, and volcanoes, while sliding causes earthquakes, like along California's San Andreas fault.

Clues Everywhere

Step three: clues everywhere. Plates also explain why some rocks are old or young. They even explain where fossils are found, like seashells on mountaintops.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Pulling apart makes ridges and rifts. Pushing together builds mountains and volcanoes. Sliding past each other causes earthquakes. Together, they explain a whole planet, and that is why this idea is so powerful.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Big ideas connect small facts. Plate tectonics links volcanoes, quakes, mountains, and trenches. It also explains where old rocks and fossils are found. Scientists use it to understand Earth's past, and to guess at its future.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a map of one plate boundary, like where two plates push together. Label what happens there, like a volcano, an earthquake, a mountain, a trench, or a ridge. Then teach someone younger the three kinds of boundaries. Pull apart, push together, and slide past! Can you remember all three?

Moving plates explain many things about Earth. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
