Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some earthquakes happen far away from plate edges?
The Big Idea
Most earthquakes happen along plate edges, but a few happen far inside the plates! They happen along old cracks and weak spots in the rock. These surprise quakes are rarer, but they do happen.
Old Cracks
Step one: old cracks. Deep inside a plate, there can be old cracks called faults from long ago. They are weak spots in the middle of strong rock.
A Push Travels
Step two: a push travels. At the edges, plates push on each other with huge force. That force travels through the rock, like a push through a mattress.
A Slip Happens
Step three: a slip happens. Sometimes the push is enough to make an old fault slip. Parts of eastern Canada, like the Charlevoix region in Quebec, have quakes of this kind.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! It starts with a push at the plate edge. The force travels deep through the rock. It finds an old crack, far from the edge. And the crack slips, making a quake.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Quakes in plate interiors are less frequent, but they can surprise people. Charlevoix, Quebec, is one of eastern Canada's most active spots. Scientists use instruments to listen for small quakes. Knowing where old faults are helps communities prepare.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a few chalk lines across a flat kitchen sponge, from edge to edge. Squeeze both edges of the sponge gently. Notice that the lines in the middle shift too. How does a push at the edge reach the middle?
