Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do plate maps look like jigsaw puzzles?

The Big Idea

Plate maps look like jigsaw puzzles because the plates really do fit together! The edges follow lines of earthquakes, volcanoes, and ridges. When people marked those on a map, big puzzle pieces appeared.

Mark the Dots

Step one: mark the dots. Scientists put a dot on a map for every earthquake and volcano. The dots did not scatter everywhere. They lined up in long, thin belts.

Connect Them

Step two: connect them. Those belts of dots outline big pieces, and the ridges mark more edges. The pieces fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Curvy Pieces

Step three: curvy pieces. Plates are curved pieces of a ball, and a flat map stretches them. That can make some plates look oddly shaped, even though they fit just fine.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Each dot on the map is a quake. Volcanoes line up along the same belts. Ridges in the ocean mark more edges. Join the belts, and the plates appear like puzzle pieces.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some plate borders are sharp lines, and some are wide zones. Scientists keep refining the borders as they learn more. The Pacific plate is the biggest piece of the puzzle. The Ring of Fire follows its edges, a long curve of volcanoes and quakes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Trace the outline of the Pacific plate on a printed world map, with a pencil. Mark the volcanoes and earthquakes along its edge with dots. Look at the dots you made. What shape do you see? It looks like a big horseshoe!
