Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does mantle rock move if it’s solid?
The Big Idea
Deep inside Earth, solid rock can flow! The mantle is so hot and under so much pressure that it moves very slowly. It is a bit like warm putty that you can stretch if you pull it slowly.
Hot and Squeezed
Step one: hot and squeezed. The mantle is hot, and rock above it presses down hard. The rock stays solid, but over a very long time it can bend and creep.
Fast or Slow
Step two: fast or slow. Hit mantle rock fast, and it acts hard. Wait millions of years, and it slowly oozes, like putty. It only moves a few centimeters each year.
Plates Ride Along
Step three: plates ride along. The slow flow of the mantle helps move the plates above it. That is how continents drift, riding along like boats on a very slow river.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The mantle is very hot, hotter than a campfire. Rock above it squeezes it with huge pressure. So it flows, but only a tiny bit each year. That slow flow helps push and pull the plates.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Solid does not always mean frozen in place. The mantle is about 2,900 kilometers thick. Mantle rock flows about as slowly as fingernails grow. Earthquake waves pass through the mantle like they do through solid rock.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Roll a ball of putty or playdough, and leave it on a table. Watch it slowly flatten over time. Now pull a piece of putty fast, and see it snap. Why does the speed matter? Slow flows, fast snaps!
