Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How many big plates does Earth have, and where are they?

The Big Idea

Earth's outer shell is broken into huge pieces called plates, a bit like a cracked eggshell! There are seven big plates, plus several smaller ones. They fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle that wraps around the whole planet.

Meet the Seven

Step one: meet the big seven. They are the Pacific, North American, Eurasian, African, Antarctic, Indo-Australian, and South American plates. The Pacific plate is the biggest of all, and most of it lies under the ocean.

Find Canada

Step two: find Canada. Canada sits on the North American plate. Off the west coast, a small plate called Juan de Fuca is slowly diving under it.

Busy Edges

Step three: watch the edges. Most volcanoes and earthquakes happen where plates meet. The plates creep along as slowly as your fingernails grow, but they never stop.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Picture an eggshell with cracks all over it. Earth's shell is cracked into big pieces called plates. The pieces fit together snugly, just like puzzle pieces. And along the edges, volcanoes and quakes pop up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Ring of Fire is a loop of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean. Earth has seven big plates and many smaller ones. Plates are about 100 kilometers thick. Plates carry whole continents and oceans along with them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to boil an egg, and let it cool all the way. Tap the egg gently all over to crack the shell, but do not peel it. Look at the shell pieces. They are like Earth's plates! Follow the cracks with your finger. Those are like plate edges!

Outro

Earth is a cracked shell of moving plates. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
