Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can distant quakes still make chandeliers wobble?

The Big Idea

Earthquake waves can travel very far through the ground. They get weaker as they spread out, like ripples in a pond. But strong ones can still reach places hundreds, or even thousands, of kilometers away.

Waves Travel

Step one: waves travel. A big earthquake sends waves through the whole ground, like ripples in a pond. They keep moving outward for a very long way.

Weaker with Distance

Step two: weaker with distance. The energy spreads over a bigger and bigger area, so the shaking gets smaller. Far away, it might be too small to feel as a shake.

Swaying Things

Step three: swaying things. Slow, long waves can set tall buildings and hanging lamps swaying gently. Water in a swimming pool can slosh back and forth too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It starts with a big quake. Slow, long waves travel far. A hanging lamp can start to swing. Even a pool can slosh back and forth.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Instruments can detect big quakes anywhere in the world. Big quakes can make the whole planet ring a little, like a bell. Tall buildings sway more from slow, long waves. If you feel a sway, drop, cover, and hold on, just in case.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Notice a heavy truck rumbling past your home. Can you feel the floor hum? That is a small version of far-away waves. Why do tall buildings and hanging lamps move more?

Outro

Quake waves travel far, so even distant earthquakes can make things sway. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
