Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the “Ring of Fire” so quake-y?

The Big Idea

The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped belt around the Pacific Ocean. Many plates meet there, so it has lots of earthquakes and volcanoes. About 90 percent of the world's earthquakes happen along it!

Plate Edges

Step one: plate edges. The Pacific Ocean sits on a huge plate surrounded by other plates. Where their edges meet, rock is always being pushed, pulled, and ground together.

Diving Plates

Step two: diving plates. In many places, one plate dives under another, which is called subduction. The sinking plate gets stuck and then slips, causing quakes.

Melting Rock

Step three: melting rock. As a plate sinks deeper, it helps rock melt into magma. The magma rises and builds a line of volcanoes.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Ring circles the Pacific Ocean. It forms a horseshoe shape. It holds many of the world's volcanoes. Canada's west coast, from Vancouver Island north, is part of it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! About 90 percent of earthquakes happen along the Ring of Fire. It holds around 75 percent of the world's volcanoes. Cascadia is a zone off the west coast that scientists watch closely. Communities there plan and practice, so people can be ready.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Trace the Pacific Ocean on a world map with your finger. Draw a dot where volcanoes and big earthquakes are found. Does it form a ring? Where is Canada on it?

Outro

The Ring of Fire has many quakes because so many plates meet around the Pacific. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
