Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why should you drop, cover, and hold on?

The Big Idea

When the ground shakes strongly, the safest plan is easy to remember: drop, cover, and hold on. Each step protects you in a different way. Practicing makes it automatic, so you can do it without thinking.

Drop

Step one: drop. Strong shaking can knock you off your feet, so you cannot move safely. Dropping to your hands and knees keeps you steady.

Cover

Step two: cover. Cover your head and neck with your arms, and crawl under a sturdy table or desk if you can. That protects you from things that might fall.

Hold On

Step three: hold on. Hold on to the table leg, so the table moves with you and keeps covering you. Stay there until the shaking stops, and then wait for a grown-up to say it is safe.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, drop to your hands and knees. Next, cover your head and neck. Get under something sturdy if one is close by. And hold on until the shaking stops.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Running outside can be more dangerous, because things can fall from buildings. Stay away from windows and heavy things that could fall, like tall shelves. Practice makes you faster and calmer. Many schools practice drills a few times every year.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a family member, do a 20 second drill at home. Drop, cover under a table, and hold on. Pick a sturdy spot in each room. Use a timer to see how fast you can get into position.

Outro

Drop, cover, and hold on keeps you steady and protected when the ground shakes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
