Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do seismographs draw squiggles?
The Big Idea
A seismograph has a heavy weight that tries to stay still. When the ground shakes, the frame moves, but the weight does not. A pen draws the difference as a squiggly line.
Heavy Weight
Step one: a heavy weight. A seismograph holds a heavy weight on a spring or a string. The weight is hard to move quickly, so it tends to stay still.
Frame Shakes
Step two: the frame shakes. When the ground shakes, the frame moves with it. But the heavy weight resists sudden movement, which is called inertia.
Pen Draws
Step three: the pen draws. A pen or a sensor records how far the frame moves compared with the weight. Today, most seismographs save the squiggles on a computer.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The heavy weight stays nearly still. The spring or string holds it up. The pen touches the paper. The paper moves, so the pen draws a long, squiggly line that grows with time.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Inertia means heavy things resist sudden movement. Big squiggles mean big shaking, and small squiggles mean small shaking. The length of the squiggle shows how long it lasted. Seismographs are placed in quiet, hidden places.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Hang a washer or a marker from a string over a piece of paper. Let the tip touch the paper. Gently shake the table and see the line wiggle. Which wiggles are bigger, and which are smaller?
Outro
Seismographs draw squiggles because a heavy weight stays still while the ground moves. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
