Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is fresh lava dangerous long after it stops glowing?

The Big Idea

Fresh lava can look dark and solid after the top cools. But a thick crust can hide hot rock underneath. That is why people stay far away from new lava, even when nothing glows.

Hidden Heat

Step one: hidden heat. A thick lava flow cools very slowly, because rock holds heat so well. Fresh lava can stay very hot inside for weeks, months, or even years.

Thin Crust

Step two: a crust that can break. The crust may look strong, but it can be thin or hollow underneath. It can break without any warning, and that is dangerous.

Steam Bursts

Step three: steam bursts. When rainwater seeps into hot rock, it turns to steam very quickly. The steam can burst out of cracks.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The surface may look dark and calm. But the inside can still be very hot. There may be thin spots and hidden holes. And steam can burst out of cracks.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Rock is a good insulator, so heat stays trapped. Fresh lava rock can also have very sharp edges. Scientists wait until it is safe before they visit. Always follow the signs and the park rangers in volcano parks, and stay on the marked trails.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch a baked potato being cut open. The skin cools quickly, but the inside steams. Keep your face back from the steam. Lava is the same idea, but much hotter, and for much longer.
