Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does lava crust over while still moving?
The Big Idea
When lava meets the air, the outside cools fast and hardens into a crust. But the inside stays glowing hot, and keeps on moving underneath. The crust works like a cozy blanket made of rock.
Cool Surface
Step one: a cool surface. Air and wind take heat away from the surface of the lava, so the outside hardens first into a dark crust. That happens in just seconds to minutes.
Heat Trapped
Step two: heat trapped inside. Rock is a good insulator, which means it holds heat in instead of letting it pass out. So the lava under the crust stays runny and hot.
Still Flowing
Step three: still flowing. Because the heat stays in, a lava flow can keep moving for many kilometers. If the crust cracks, you can see the bright orange lava beneath.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The dark crust may look cool, but looks can fool you. Underneath, the lava glows. When the crust cracks, you can see the glow. And the whole flow keeps on moving.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A crust can look dark and cool while the inside glows. The crust holds heat in like a blanket. Lava can stay hot inside a flow for a long time. Never walk on new lava. The crust can be thin.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, warm some milk or cocoa and let it cool a little. Watch a skin form on top. The skin traps the heat underneath. Lava's crust works in a similar way, but lava is far hotter!
