Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a caldera?
The Big Idea
A caldera is a huge bowl-shaped hollow in the ground. It forms when a volcano empties its magma so fast that the ground above collapses. Calderas can be many kilometers wide!
Magma Chamber
Step one: a magma chamber. Deep under a volcano, a big pocket of magma can build up. It holds up some of the ground above it.
Huge Eruption
Step two: a huge eruption. A very large eruption can blast out most of the magma very quickly. Now the chamber is emptier, and the ground above has little to hold it up.
Ground Collapses
Step three: the ground collapses. The ground above the empty chamber sinks down, and it leaves a huge bowl-shaped hollow. That wide bowl is the caldera.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A caldera is a wide, bowl-shaped hollow. Its walls are steep, because the ground dropped down. Rain and snow can fill it with a lake, like Crater Lake in Oregon. Some calderas still have hot springs and steam vents.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Calderas are much wider than ordinary volcano craters. Crater Lake in Oregon fills a caldera. Calderas form after very large eruptions. Many calderas still have heat underneath, so visit only the official viewing areas.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, pile flour on a tray. Bury a partly blown-up balloon under it. Let the air out slowly. Watch the surface sink into a bowl, just like a caldera!
Outro
A caldera is a huge bowl that forms when the ground falls into an empty magma chamber. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
