Why Do Scientists Still Discover New Animal Species Every Year?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do scientists still discover new animal species every year?

The Big Idea

Scientists still discover new animal species every year because Earth is huge and full of tiny, hidden animals! Most places have never been searched closely. Only a fraction of Earth's species have names so far.

Thousands a Year

Step one: new species keep turning up. Scientists find thousands of new animal species every year. Most are small ones, like insects, spiders, and deep-sea animals, which are easy to miss.

Hidden Places

Step two: look in more places. Most places on Earth have not been closely searched. Even in Canada, new insects and tiny animals are still being found.

You Can Help

Step three: keep looking. Only a fraction of Earth's species have names so far. A curious person with a hand lens and a notebook could find something new.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Many new species are tiny insects. Spiders are being discovered, too. The deep sea still hides many surprises. And a hand lens helps you spot small things.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Only a fraction of Earth's species have names so far. New species are found in rainforests, oceans, caves, and even backyards. Scientists carefully describe and name each new species, so everyone can talk about it. Look gently, wash your hands, and put everything back as you found it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, gently look under a flowerpot or log in a garden. Count the different kinds of tiny animals you find. Sketch them. Then put everything back just as you found it.
