Why Do Sperm Whales Dive So Deep?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do sperm whales dive so deep?

The Big Idea

Sperm whales dive so deep because their favorite food lives in the dark depths! They can dive over a thousand meters. Their bodies are built to handle it.

Store Oxygen

Step one: store oxygen. A sperm whale's muscles and blood store lots of oxygen. That lets it stay under for an hour or more, long after we would need a breath.

Handle Pressure

Step two: handle the pressure. The deeper you go, the stronger the water pressure gets. A sperm whale's flexible ribs and lungs can squeeze together safely under it, so the pressure does not hurt it.

Hunt with Sound

Step three: hunt in the dark. Down there, it is dark. The whale hunts squid using sound, by making loud clicks and listening for the echoes that bounce back.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Oxygen is stored in the muscles and blood. Water pressure grows with every meter of depth. Far down, the sea is completely dark and very cold. That is where the squid live.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sperm whales can dive over 1,000 meters deep. That is deeper than the tallest skyscrapers are tall. They can stay down for an hour or more. Pressure grows stronger the deeper you go. Watch whales from a boat tour with experts, or on video.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, push an empty cup upside down into a tub of water. The air inside gets squeezed smaller. Push it deeper. What happens to the air? That is how pressure changes with depth.
