Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do tardigrades survive extreme conditions?
The Big Idea
Tardigrades survive extreme conditions because they can dry up and pause their bodies! These tiny animals look like chubby bears with eight legs. They wake up again when water returns.
Tiny Bear
Step one: meet the tardigrade. A tardigrade is about half a millimeter long, so you need a microscope to see it well. It looks like a chubby bear with eight legs, which is why people call it a water bear.
Dry Up
Step two: dry up. When its home dries out, it pulls in its legs and shrivels up, losing almost all of its water. It goes into a dried state called a tun.
Wake Up
Step three: wake up. In the dried state, it can survive extreme cold, heat, and radiation. When water returns, it wakes up and starts moving again.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The body is round and chubby, with a tiny mouth. It walks on eight stubby legs. When dry, it curls up into a tiny tun. And a drop of water can wake it up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! You might find tardigrades in damp moss. They are tiny, but they are real animals. They live in moss, soil, and even oceans, all around the world. Be gentle with moss, and wash your hands afterward.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, soak a pinch of dry moss in water for a few hours. Look at it with a hand lens or a microscope. Tardigrades live in moss, but they are tiny. What else lives there?
