Why Is a Cheetah the Land Sprint King?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a cheetah the land sprint king?

The Big Idea

A cheetah is the land sprint king because its body is built for speed! It can run up to about 100 kilometers an hour. But only in short bursts.

Built for Speed

Step one: a speedy body. A cheetah has a flexible spine, long legs, and big lungs. Its spine bends like a spring to give each stride extra reach, and its long tail helps it steer and balance.

Grip the Ground

Step two: grip the ground. Its claws act like running spikes. They grip the ground so it can speed up from standing to 100 kilometers an hour in just a few seconds.

Short Battery

Step three: rest afterward. The sprint uses so much energy that the cat can only run for about half a minute. Then it has to rest for a good while and catch its breath, so it hunts in short, smart bursts.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A bendy spine stretches and springs. Long legs take giant steps. Big lungs bring in lots of air. And gripping claws work like running spikes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A cheetah can go from standing to 100 kilometers an hour in a few seconds. That is as quick as a sports car! It is a speed machine with a short battery life. Admire cheetahs from far away, and never approach a wild cat.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up nearby, do a short sprint for 10 seconds. Then notice your breathing and heart rate. How long does it take to recover? Why can't a cheetah sprint all day?
