Why Do Urban Foxes Live in Cities?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do urban foxes live in cities?

The Big Idea

Urban foxes live in cities because cities offer food, shelter, and quiet spots! Red foxes are adaptable, which means they can adjust to new places. Many foxes now live in towns across Canada.

Find Food

Step one: find food. Cities offer food scraps and lots of small animals to eat. Parks and yards give them places to hunt, and quiet corners to rest in.

Find Shelter

Step two: find a quiet spot. Foxes sometimes den under sheds and decks. Those places are dry and out of sight, and a good place to raise kits.

Stay Wild

Step three: stay wild. Foxes usually avoid people, and they are most active around dawn and dusk. Wild animals should never be fed or approached, even if they seem friendly.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Parks give foxes space to move and hunt for mice. A quiet spot under a shed can become a den. Open garbage can attract foxes, so keep the lid closed. And the best way to enjoy a fox is from a safe distance.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Red foxes live in many places, from forests to cities. Closed garbage helps keep foxes wild. Foxes are shy and prefer to avoid people and dogs. Stay back, and tell a grown-up if a fox seems sick or too friendly.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, list three kinds of wild animals you have seen near your home. Note how far away you were from each one. What is a safe distance? How can you enjoy them from afar?
