Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ghost crabs dig burrows on the beach?
The Big Idea
Ghost crabs dig burrows on the beach to stay cool, damp, and hidden! The hot sun can dry a crab out. So they hide deep in the sand by day and come out at night.
Dig Deep
Step one: dig a burrow. A ghost crab digs its burrow in the sand above the high tide line. That way, the ocean waves do not wash the burrow away, and the sand stays loose enough to dig.
Cool and Damp
Step two: stay cool. Deep in the sand, it is cooler and damper. That keeps the crab from drying out during the hot day.
Night Time
Step three: come out at night. The crab hides all day, then comes out in the dark to look for food. It can plug its entrance to stay hidden.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A ghost crab is pale and a few centimeters across. Its color looks just like sand. The burrow is a safe, damp hideout. And the crab is most active at night.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Ghost crabs are quick and hard to see at night. Their pale color blends in with the sand. Their burrows can go down quite deep. Watch crabs from far away, and never dig up a burrow with a crab in it.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! At the beach, dig a small hole in damp sand. Compare the temperature on top of the sand to deep down. Which one is cooler? Why would a crab want to be down there? Do this away from any real crab burrows.
