Why Do Poison Dart Frogs Advertise Bright Colors?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do poison dart frogs advertise bright colors?

The Big Idea

Poison dart frogs advertise bright colors because the colors are a warning sign! They say, I taste bad, or I'm toxic. Predators learn to stay away.

Tiny and Bright

Step one: tiny and bright. Poison dart frogs are tiny and brightly colored, in shades like red, yellow, blue, and green. Their colors warn predators, I taste bad, or I'm toxic.

Warning Signal

Step two: a warning signal. This kind of warning is called aposematism. It works because predators learn to avoid them after one bad experience, so the frogs do not have to hide.

Where Toxins Come From

Step three: where toxins come from. Many get their toxins from eating certain ants and mites in the wild. Frogs raised in captivity are not toxic, because they do not eat those wild foods.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The frog is tiny. Its colors are bright and bold. The colors warn predators to stay away. And the toxins come from its wild diet. Bright means keep back, and that keeps the frog safe.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The brighter the frog, the stronger the warning. Poison dart frogs live in the rainforests of Central and South America. Many kinds are smaller than a paperclip. Never touch bright wild frogs or insects. They may be unsafe.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sort pictures or toys of animals into two groups: hide colors and warn colors. Which animals use bright colors? Remember, never touch bright wild frogs or insects. They may be unsafe. Tell a grown-up what you found!
