Why Are Dragonflies Such Good Hunters?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are dragonflies such good hunters?

The Big Idea

Dragonflies are such good hunters because they have big eyes, smart brains, and amazing wings! They catch their prey around 9 times out of 10. That is much better than most hunters, including lions, which catch their prey far less often.

Huge Eyes

Step one: huge eyes. A dragonfly's huge eyes see movement very well. Each eye is made of thousands of tiny lenses, and together they see almost all the way around.

Aim Ahead

Step two: aim ahead. A dragonfly's brain predicts where a flying insect is going. It steers toward that spot, not to where the insect is now.

Four Wings

Step three: four wings. Its four wings move separately, so it can hover, dart, and turn sharply. That helps it follow a tricky target as it zigzags through the air, even backward or sideways.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Big eyes spot a tiny moving bug. The brain predicts where the bug is heading. Four wings make sharp turns. And the dragonfly meets its target. Bullseye, right on target.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dragonflies are very old insects, over 300 million years old. Ancient ones were as big as hawks. Young dragonflies, called nymphs, live in the water before they grow wings. Watch dragonflies near ponds, and let them fly free.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Have a friend roll a ball across the floor. Try to stop it by aiming ahead of it. Do you aim at where it is or where it will be? How do dragonflies do it?
