Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do frogs use sticky tongues?
The Big Idea
Frogs use sticky tongues because they are the perfect bug catchers! A frog's tongue is soft, quick, and covered in sticky saliva. It flips out, grabs the insect, and is back in a flash.
Flip Out
Step one: flip out. A frog's tongue is attached at the front of its mouth. It flips out in a fraction of a second, much faster than you could ever move your own tongue.
Sticky Grab
Step two: the sticky grab. The tongue is soft and covered in sticky saliva that grabs the insect and holds on. It acts like a sticky cushion on the bug.
Pull and Gulp
Step three: pull and gulp. Then the tongue pulls the prey back into the mouth. The whole thing happens faster than you can blink.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The frog waits for a bug to come near. Its soft tongue flips out. The sticky saliva grabs the bug. Back goes the tongue, and the bug is gone. Quick as a flash, and dinner is served.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Frogs close their eyes and push food down when they swallow. Their eyeballs actually press down into the mouth to help. Frogs eat insects that can bother people, such as flies and mosquitoes. Look at frogs from a distance, and wash your hands if you ever touch one.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Try to pick up grains of rice with dry fingers. Then try again with slightly damp fingers. Which is easier? Why does a little wetness help a frog catch food?
