How Do Jumping Spiders Hunt Without a Web?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do jumping spiders hunt without a web?

The Big Idea

Jumping spiders hunt without a web because they have amazing eyesight and a super pounce! They don't wait for dinner to get stuck. They stalk their prey, sneak closer, and leap.

Eight Eyes

Step one: eight eyes. A jumping spider has eight eyes, and the two big ones in front can see sharp, clear pictures. Jumping spiders are among the best-sighted of all spiders.

Stalk and Sneak

Step two: stalk and sneak. The spider spots a tiny insect, then sneaks closer, a little at a time. It stays low and watches carefully, like a very small cat.

Safety Line

Step three: the pounce. Before it jumps, the spider attaches a silk safety line, like a climber's rope. Blood pressure in its legs helps push it into the air.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Big front eyes spot the prey. The spider sneaks up quietly. It clips on a silk line for safety. Then it pounces in a flash. No web needed.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Blood pressure in their legs helps them leap. Jumping spiders can jump many times their own body length. They are small and harmless to people, and they are great at pest control. Let jumping spiders go about their day, and watch them from a distance.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cover one eye and try to catch a soft ball tossed gently by a friend. Then try again with both eyes. Which way is easier? Spiders use two front eyes to judge distance.
