Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do starlings fly in giant swirling clouds?

The Big Idea

Starlings fly in giant swirling clouds because each bird copies its closest neighbors! There is no leader at all. The swirls also make it hard for a hawk to pick out one bird.

Watch Neighbors

Step one: watch your neighbors. Every starling pays attention to just its closest seven neighbors or so. It copies how they move, speeding up, slowing down, and turning at the same time.

A Wave of Turns

Step two: a wave of turns. There is no leader. When one bird turns, its neighbors turn, and then their neighbors turn. The turn ripples through the flock, so the whole cloud twists in waves.

Safety Show

Step three: a safety show. The swirls make it hard for a hawk to pick one bird to chase. These big shapes are called murmurations.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It starts with one starling. It watches about seven neighbors. A turn ripples out like a wave. And thousands of birds swirl together in the evening sky. No one is in charge.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! These swirling shapes are called murmurations. A murmuration can have thousands of starlings, and it can look like a single living cloud. They often gather at sunset before roosting for the night. Watch from far away, and let the birds go about their evening.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stand in a circle with friends. Choose one person to turn their body. Each person copies the person on their right. Watch the wave of turning go around the circle. How fast does it travel?
