Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do birds nest in colonies?

The Big Idea

Birds nest in colonies because there is safety in numbers! In a big group, many eyes can spot danger and give the alarm. Colonies are also often near plenty of food.

Many Eyes

Step one: many eyes. With so many birds around, someone usually spots a predator early and gives the alarm. Then the whole colony knows to be alert.

Group Defense

Step two: group defense. Many birds can mob an intruder together. That means they fly at it and scare it away, which is much harder for a single bird to do.

Good Food

Step three: good food. Many colonies are near plentiful food, like fish in the ocean. The group offers safety and great places to raise chicks.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The nests are packed close together. Many birds are on lookout at once. When one gives an alarm, the others hear it. And the food is usually close by. It is a busy neighborhood.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Seabirds and swallows often nest in big groups. Neighbors in a colony may squabble too, but safety wins. Some seabird colonies have thousands of birds. Watch bird colonies from far away, so you don't scare the parents.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Watch a flock of pigeons or gulls from a distance. Notice how many take off at once when something startles them. Count how many times you see one bird alert the others. Write down what you see and tell a grown-up!

Outro

Colonies keep birds safe, because many eyes are better than two. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
