Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do orcas teach calves to hunt?

The Big Idea

Orcas teach their calves to hunt because hunting is a skill that has to be learned! Young orcas learn by watching their families, and each family has its own traditions. Those lessons get passed down from generation to generation.

Smart Whales

Step one: smart learners. Orcas are very smart animals, and young orcas learn how to hunt by watching their families. A calf stays close to its mother and the rest of its pod, which is the orca word for a family group.

Different Menus

Step two: family traditions. Different pods have different traditions. Near British Columbia, resident orcas mostly eat salmon, while Bigg's orcas hunt marine mammals like seals.

Practice

Step three: practice. Calves practice their skills again and again until they get them right. Then they teach the next generation, so the traditions never get lost.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Orcas live in family groups called pods. Calves learn by watching the grown-ups. They practice over and over again. And each pod even has its own dialect of calls. Families pass down what they know.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Orca families have their own dialects, too. Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family. Some pods stay together for a whole lifetime. If you go whale watching, stay on the boat and let the whales come to you.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Teach a younger child or a sibling a safe skill you know. It could be tying a shoe or making a paper airplane. Show it step by step, then let them try. What did you learn about teaching?

Outro

Orca families teach their calves, one lesson at a time. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
