Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do baby ducklings follow their mother in a line?

The Big Idea

Baby ducklings follow their mother in a line because they learn to follow the first big moving thing they see! That is usually their mom, and following her keeps them safe. The line helps the whole family stay together.

Hatch Day

Step one: hatching. Just after hatching, a duckling pays close attention to the first big moving thing it sees. In nature, that is almost always its mother.

Imprinting

Step two: imprinting. This quick kind of learning is called imprinting. The duckling learns who mom is, and it follows her wherever she waddles.

Stay in Line

Step three: stay in line. Walking in a line keeps ducklings close, so their mother can watch over them. They also find food together, and staying with mom is how they stay safe.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A duckling hatches out of its egg. It looks at the first big moving thing nearby. It learns that this is mom, and it follows her. The ducklings walk in a neat line behind her. Now the family stays together.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Ducklings can walk and swim within a day of hatching. They can eat on their own, but mom keeps them safe and warm. A line makes it easy for mom to count her babies. If ducklings are on the road, stop and let the family cross.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Play follow the leader with friends. Notice how staying in a line keeps the group together. Now try it where everyone wanders in a different direction. What happened? Tell a grown-up!
