How Do Mosquitoes Find People?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do mosquitoes find people?

The Big Idea

Female mosquitoes find people by following several clues at once! They sense the carbon dioxide in our breath from far away. Then they use smell, warmth, and movement to get closer.

Breath Clue

Step one: follow the breath. People breathe out carbon dioxide, and a mosquito can sense it from a long way off. It flies toward the places where the air is richest with it.

Smell and Warmth

Step two: get closer. As the mosquito gets near, it smells chemicals on our skin and feels our body warmth. Each clue helps it narrow down the spot, like a game of hot and cold.

Spot Movement

Step three: notice movement. Mosquitoes also notice movement, so a moving person is easier to find. Only female mosquitoes bite, because they need blood to make eggs. Male mosquitoes drink nectar.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Breath is the first clue, from far away. Skin smell is the next clue. Body warmth helps up close. And movement gives the last clue.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Mosquito bites itch because of their spit, which our bodies react to. Male mosquitoes drink nectar and do not bite. Mosquitoes lay eggs in still water, like puddles and buckets. Use bug spray only with a grown-up, and ask about long sleeves outside.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a mosquito following four clues to find a person: breath, smell, warmth, and movement. Which clue works from farther away? Which clue do you think a long-sleeved shirt hides best? Compare your answers with a friend.
