How Do Homing Pigeons Find Their Way Home?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do homing pigeons find their way home?

The Big Idea

Homing pigeons use several clues to find their way home! They can sense Earth's magnetic field, and they use the Sun's position. They also notice landmarks and may even smell familiar scents.

Magnetic Sense

Step one: sense Earth's magnetism. Earth has a magnetic field, a bit like a giant magnet. Pigeons can sense it, which may help them know which way they are heading.

Sun Compass

Step two: use the Sun. Pigeons use the position of the Sun as a kind of compass. Because the Sun moves, their brain keeps track of the time too.

Landmarks and Smells

Step three: spot familiar places. They notice landmarks like rivers, roads, and buildings, and they may smell familiar scents too. Scientists still do not know exactly how it all works together.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A magnetic sense gives a direction. The Sun works like a compass. Landmarks help near home. Scents may add more clues for the trip.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Pigeons were once used to carry messages. Some pigeons have flown hundreds of kilometers back home. Pigeons can see more colors than people can. Watch pigeons from a distance, and wash your hands after being outdoors.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a map of your walk to a nearby park using landmarks, like a big tree, a store, and a stop sign. Hand it to a friend. See if they can find the way by following your clues. Which landmarks helped the most?
