Why Do Elephants Hear with Their Feet?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do elephants hear with their feet?

The Big Idea

Elephants can pick up faraway rumbles through their feet! Elephants make deep rumbles, and some are too low for people to hear. These sounds travel through the air and through the ground.

Deep Rumbles

Step one: rumble. Elephants make deep rumbles, and some are too low for people to hear. These sounds are so deep that they can carry a very long way across the grassland.

Through the Ground

Step two: travel through earth. Rumbles travel through the air, and also through the ground as tiny vibrations. The ground carries them to elephants that are far away, even when the air is windy and noisy.

Feet and Trunk

Step three: feel the message. An elephant's feet and trunk are very sensitive to vibrations, and the big footpads have special touch sensors. Scientists think this is how herds stay in touch across long distances, even when they cannot see each other.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! An elephant makes a very deep rumble. The ground carries some of the vibration. Sensitive feet and trunk feel it. That keeps the herd connected.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some rumbles can be heard by elephants kilometers away. Elephants sometimes stand still, as if listening with their feet. Their big ears also work as cooling fans. Watch elephants only from a safe distance.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Press your ear to a table while a friend taps the far end. Is the sound louder than through the air? Solids carry vibrations well. How might an elephant's feet use this?
