Why Do Butterflies Taste with Their Feet?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do butterflies taste with their feet?

The Big Idea

Butterflies taste with their feet because they need to pick the right leaf! Taste sensors on the feet tell a butterfly if a plant is food for its caterpillars. Only then does she lay her eggs there.

Land and Drum

Step one: land and drum. When a butterfly lands on a leaf, it drums on it with its feet. Tiny taste sensors on the feet touch the leaf's surface.

Pick the Plant

Step two: check the plant. Each kind of caterpillar eats only certain plants. The butterfly tastes the leaf, and lays her eggs only on the right kind.

Find Nectar

Step three: find the sweet stuff. Tasting with its feet also helps a butterfly find sweet nectar in flowers. Then it unrolls a long tongue, like a curly straw, to sip the sweet drink.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The feet are covered in taste sensors. They check whether the leaf is the right one. If it is, she lays eggs on the plant. Feet also help find sweet nectar in flowers.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Flies taste with their feet too. A butterfly's tongue is a long tube called a proboscis. A monarch caterpillar eats only milkweed leaves. Watch butterflies from a polite distance, and don't catch them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Watch a butterfly or bee from a polite distance. Count how many leaves or flowers it touches before it stays. Imagine tasting everything you step on. What would that be like?
