Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do penguins have dense feathers?

The Big Idea

Penguins have dense feathers to stay warm and dry in icy water! Their short, stiff feathers are packed tightly, with fluffy ones underneath. The layers trap air close to the skin.

Packed Layers

Step one: pack the feathers. Penguin feathers are short, stiff, and tightly packed. Soft, fluffy feathers sit underneath them, like a warm sweater under a raincoat.

Trap Air

Step two: trap warm air. The overlapping layers hold a layer of air close to the skin. That air blanket slows down heat loss, even when a penguin dives into cold seas.

Oil and Fat

Step three: add waterproofing. A gland near the tail makes oil that a penguin spreads on its feathers to help shed water. A layer of fat under the skin adds even more warmth, so a penguin can stand on the ice.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The feathers are short and packed tight. Air gets trapped near the skin. Oil helps water slide right off. A fat layer adds even more warmth.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Penguins spend lots of time preening to keep their feathers waterproof. Penguins molt all their feathers once a year, so they stay on land until new ones grow. A penguin feather is better for swimming birds than fur would be. Watch penguins at a zoo or on video.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Put on a thin shirt and notice how warm you feel. Then add a jacket on top. Trapped air in the layers keeps heat in, just like penguin feathers. Which layer holds more warm air?
