Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are blue jays blue without any blue color in their feathers?

The Big Idea

A blue jay is blue because of how its feathers bounce light, not because of blue paint! Tiny structures inside each feather reflect blue light back to your eyes. Other colors are absorbed or pass through.

No Blue Pigment

Step one: check for paint. A blue jay's feathers have no blue pigment in them at all. The pigment inside is dark brown.

Bounce Blue Light

Step two: bounce the light. Tiny structures inside each feather scatter and bounce blue light back to your eyes. Other colors pass through or get absorbed.

Dark Backing

Step three: make it pop. A dark brown pigment underneath soaks up extra light, which makes the blue stand out. If you crush a feather, the blue disappears, because the tiny structures are destroyed.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Inside the feather are tiny structures. They bounce blue light toward your eyes. Dark brown pigment soaks up the extra light. That makes the blue feather look bright.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists call this structural color. Many other blues in nature work this way, like the blue in butterfly wings. The blue changes when light comes from different angles. Wash your hands after touching any feather you find outside.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! If you find a blue jay feather outside, wash your hands afterward. Look at it with light behind it, then with light in front. Does it still look blue both ways? What do you see?

Outro

Blue jay blue comes from tiny structures, not paint. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
