Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do birds have feathers instead of fur?
The Big Idea
Birds have feathers because feathers can do jobs that fur cannot! They are light and strong, and they are shaped for flying, staying warm, and keeping dry. Fur would be heavy and soggy in the rain, and it could never make a wing.
Flat Vanes
Step one: build a wing. A flat feather vane has tiny barbs that hook together like a zipper. Together, many feathers make a wing surface that catches air.
Fluffy Layer
Step two: stay warm. Fluffy feathers under the flat ones trap air close to the body. That warm air works like a puffy winter jacket.
Send Messages
Step three: use color. Many birds use bright feathers to show they are healthy, or to send messages to other birds. Feathers can even help birds stay dry in rain.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The flat part of a feather is called the vane. It is made of tiny barbs that hook together. Soft, fluffy down feathers sit underneath. And bright colors help birds send messages.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A feather is mostly keratin, the same stuff as your fingernails. If barbs come apart, a bird can zip them back together by preening. Only birds have feathers. Look for feathers on the ground, but don't pull one from a bird.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Find a feather that has fallen on the ground. Look closely at the tiny hooks holding the barbs together. Gently pull the barbs apart. Then smooth them back together with your fingers.
