Why Wear Seat Belts?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why wear seat belts?

The Big Idea

We wear seat belts because they spread crash forces across the strongest parts of your body. They also keep you in the safer part of the car, and not thrown around. Buckle up on every ride, every time!

Keep Moving

Step one: bodies keep moving. When a car stops suddenly, your body wants to keep going at the same speed. That is a science idea called inertia, and it is why a belt is so helpful.

Strong Parts

Step two: strong parts. A seat belt lies across your strong hip bones and collarbone. It spreads the force across a wide area instead of one small spot.

Right Fit

Step three: the right fit. Younger kids need the right car seat or booster until the belt fits properly. The back seat is the safest place for kids, until they are old enough, as a grown-up checks.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at seat belts! The lap belt goes low over your hips. The shoulder belt crosses your chest and collarbone. A booster seat helps the belt fit. And the back seat is the safest spot for kids.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Seat belts are one of the most important safety tools in a car. The shoulder belt should never go behind your back or under your arm. Everyone in the car needs to buckle up, including grown-ups. Ask a grown-up if your seat is right for your size.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Buckle up first on every ride. Ask a grown-up if your seat is right for your size. Then check that everyone else is buckled too!
