Why Brush and Floss Teeth?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why brush and floss teeth?

The Big Idea

We brush and floss because a sticky film of bacteria grows on your teeth all day. That film makes acids that can etch into the hard outside of your teeth, called enamel. Cleaning breaks up the film and protects your smile.

Sticky Film

Step one: sticky film. Bacteria in your mouth form a sticky film called plaque. It grows all day and all night, which is why we brush every day.

Acid Attack

Step two: acid attack. When bacteria eat leftover sugar, they make acids. Acids can wear away enamel and cause holes called cavities, and those need a dentist to fix.

Clean Up

Step three: clean up. Brushing cleans the tops and sides of your teeth, and flossing cleans between them. Together they remove plaque so enamel stays strong.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at teeth! Enamel is the hard shield on your teeth, covering the softer part inside. Plaque is the sticky film that makes acids when it meets sugar. Brushing sweeps it away. And flossing cleans where the brush cannot reach.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Enamel is the hardest substance in your body. Brush for two minutes, morning and night, using a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste. Flossing reaches the sides of teeth that a brush misses. Tell a grown-up if your gums bleed a lot or a tooth hurts.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Brush for two full minutes, morning and night. Use a timer or play a two-minute song. Floss gently with a grown-up's help!
