Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why use sunscreen?
The Big Idea
We use sunscreen because sunlight has UV rays that can burn skin and harm skin cells. Sunscreen works like a shield, taking in or blocking some of the rays. It protects your body's outer suit now and for the future.
UV Rays
Step one: UV rays. The Sun sends out ultraviolet light, called UV, which you cannot see or feel. It can reach your skin even on cloudy days, so sunscreen is not just for hot days.
Sunburn
Step two: sunburn. Too much UV can burn your skin, making it red and sore. Over time, UV can also damage skin cells.
Skin Shield
Step three: build a shield. Sunscreen helps protect you, and so do hats, shirts, and shade. Put on sunscreen before you go out, and add more every couple of hours.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at sun safety! Sunscreen goes on all exposed skin. A hat shades your face and head. A light shirt covers your shoulders. And shade gives your skin a break.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Look for sunscreen labeled broad spectrum with SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen needs to be put on again after swimming or sweating. Shade is strongest in the middle of the day, so take breaks. A grown-up can help you put it on, and keep it out of your eyes.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Before outdoor play, ask a grown-up to help you put on sunscreen. Do it before the middle of the day. Then add a hat and find some shade!
