Why Do You Feel Sleepy When You Are Sick?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do you feel sleepy when you are sick?

The Big Idea

You feel sleepy when you are sick because sleep helps your body fight germs. While you rest, your body puts extra energy into immune work and repair. So sleeping more when you are sick is smart!

Immune Signals

Step one: immune signals. When your immune system fights germs, it sends chemical messages to your brain. Some of those messages make you feel tired and sleepy.

Save Energy

Step two: save energy. Fighting germs and repairing your body takes a lot of energy. When you rest, more of your energy can go to the immune team.

Sleep And Repair

Step three: sleep and repair. During sleep, your body keeps working on healing and getting stronger. Rest is a helpful sidekick to any treatment from a doctor.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at sick-day sleepiness! Your immune team fights the germs. It sends tired signals to your brain. You rest more, and that saves energy. And your body heals and repairs.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many animals sleep more when they are sick, not just people. It is normal to feel extra sleepy for a day or two when you have a cold. Fluids like water also help your body while you rest. Tell a grown-up if you are very sleepy and cannot wake up easily, or if you feel worse.

Think Like a Scientist
