Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do people learn Braille and sign languages?

The Big Idea

People learn Braille and sign languages because words can travel in more ways than just spoken sounds. Braille uses touch, and sign languages use hands, faces, and movement. These tools help everyone communicate, learn, and belong, no matter how their bodies sense the world.

Braille

Step one: Braille. Braille is a code of raised dots that you read by touch, and it was invented by a teenager named Louis Braille. Each letter is made from a pattern of up to six dots, arranged in two columns, and fingers glide along to read.

Sign Language

Step two: sign languages. Sign languages use hand shapes, movements, and facial expressions to share ideas. They are full languages with their own grammar, and different countries have their own.

Belonging

Step three: belonging. When we learn these tools, we can talk and share with more friends. That is why you may see Braille on signs and elevators, and captions on videos.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at language! Spoken words travel on sound. Braille travels on touch. Sign language travels with hands and faces. And fingerspelling signs each letter on one hand.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Braille was invented more than 200 years ago. American Sign Language is different from British Sign Language. Babies can learn simple signs before they can talk. Learning other ways to communicate helps everyone belong.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Learn five letters of the fingerspelled alphabet. Practice them with a friend or a grown-up. Then spell your name with your hands!
