Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is touch not just one sense?

The Big Idea

Touch is not just one sense, because your skin has different sensors for different feelings. Some feel pressure, some feel vibration, and some feel stretch. Others sense temperature and pain, so one little patch of skin does many jobs.

Pressure

Step one: pressure. Some sensors notice when something presses on your skin, like a feather or a heavy coin. They tell your brain how hard the press is, so you know a feather from a heavy coin.

Vibration

Step two: vibration. Other sensors feel buzzing, like a phone ringing in your pocket. They also feel tiny bumps as your fingers glide over a rough surface, like a sidewalk or a sweater.

Heat, Cold, Pain

Step three: temperature and pain. Separate sensors notice hot, cold, and pain, which help keep you safe. If something hurts a lot, or feels strange, tell a grown-up.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at touch! Pressure sensors feel pushing on your skin. Vibration sensors feel buzzing and rumbling. Stretch sensors notice when your skin pulls. And temperature sensors feel hot and cold.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Skin is your largest organ, and it is covered in sensors. Sensors send messages to your brain very quickly. Some parts, like fingertips and lips, have lots of sensors. Different sensors work together to tell you about a hug or a hot cup.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Gently tickle your arm with a feather. Then press a coin on your arm, and notice how each one feels different. Which sensors do you think were working?
