Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does loud noise risk hearing?

The Big Idea

Loud noise can risk your hearing because the tiny hair cells in your inner ear are delicate. Very loud sound can damage them. And once they are damaged, they do not grow back.

Sound Waves

Step one: sound waves. Sound is made of vibrations that travel through the air into your ear. Louder sounds make bigger vibrations.

Hair Cells

Step two: hair cells. Deep inside your ear is a snail-shaped part called the cochlea. It has thousands of tiny hair cells that turn vibrations into signals for your brain.

Too Loud!

Step three: too loud is risky. Very loud sound, or loud sound for a long time, can hurt hair cells. That can cause hearing loss that may last forever, so we protect our ears.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at hearing! Your outer ear collects sound. The eardrum shakes with the sound. The cochlea turns the shaking into signals. And the hair cells are the delicate sensors that do the work.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Hair cells in humans do not grow back once they are damaged. Loud music, fireworks, and sirens can be too loud, especially up close. Headphones should be kept at a low volume, no more than 60 percent. Take listening breaks, and tell a grown-up if your ears hurt or ring.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, check your headphone volume. Keep it at no more than 60 percent, and take a break every 60 minutes. Your future music will thank you!
