Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the blind spot exist?

The Big Idea

The blind spot exists because of where the nerve leaves your eye. That tiny spot has no light sensors, so it cannot see anything. But your brain fills in the gap, so you almost never notice!

Light Sensors

Step one: light sensors. The back of your eye is called the retina, and it is covered in tiny cells that catch light. These cells are called photoreceptors.

The Nerve Exit

Step two: the nerve exit. All the signals travel out of your eye through one bundle called the optic nerve. Right where that bundle leaves, there is no room for light sensors, so that spot is blind.

Brain Fix

Step three: your brain to the rescue. Your other eye sees that spot, and your brain also guesses the missing part from the area around it. So you see one smooth picture.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the blind spot! The retina is full of light sensors. The optic nerve carries the messages away to the brain. Where it leaves, there is a small blind spot. And the brain fills in the gap without you noticing.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Every person has a blind spot in each eye. Your two eyes cover for each other, since the spots are in different places. Your brain edits what you see to make it smooth. Eyes are delicate, so ask a grown-up to try the dot demo with you.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a blind spot dot demo in a science book or on a website. Cover one eye and follow the steps. Watch a dot vanish, and tell someone how your brain did it!

Outro

Your brain edits reality so smoothly that you never notice the gap. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
