Why Do You Get Taller in Spurts?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do you get taller in spurts?

The Big Idea

You get taller in spurts because your long bones grow in bursts, not at a steady speed! Growth plates at the ends of your bones add length. Sometimes they work fast, and sometimes they take it slow.

Growth Plates

Step one: growth plates. Near the ends of your long bones are special areas called growth plates. They make new bone, so the bone gets longer, which makes you taller.

Bursts of Growth

Step two: bursts of growth. Hormones, which are body messengers, tell the plates how fast to work. Kids grow fastest as babies, and again around puberty, with slower times in between. That is why shoes and pants suddenly get too short.

Fuel It

Step three: fuel the project. Sleep and good food give your body what it needs to build. Growing takes lots of energy, so rest well and eat a balanced diet. Your body does the building while you sleep.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Long bones are in your arms and legs. Growth plates add new length. Sleep gives your body time to build. And over time, you get taller.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Height is a construction timeline, not a race. Everyone grows at their own speed, and all bodies are different, which is perfectly okay. Growth plates eventually harden, and then growing stops. Ask a doctor if you ever have questions about growing.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Mark your height on a wall chart. Do it again every few months with a grown-up. Look for spurts and slow times!
