Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does steam burn more than water?

The Big Idea

Boiling water is hot, but steam can be even more dangerous. It can give you a worse burn! But they're about the same temperature! The secret is hidden heat. Let's find out how it works.

Water as Gas

Step one: steam is water as a gas. When water boils, its molecules break free and fly off as a gas, called steam. Real steam is invisible! The white cloud you see is steam already cooling into tiny droplets.

Hidden Heat

Step two: it carries extra hidden heat. It takes lots of energy to turn water into steam. That energy doesn't disappear. The steam carries it, like a secret backpack full of heat!

Dumps Heat

Step three: when steam hits skin, it turns back into water, and dumps that heat. As it changes back to liquid, it lets go of all that hidden energy, right onto your skin. That's many times more heat than the same amount of boiling water. So steam burns are extra painful!

A Closer Look

Let's follow the hidden heat! First, the stove pours heat into the water, until it boils. The steam flies off, carrying that hidden heat with it. When it touches cooler skin, the heat comes pouring out!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Never lean over a boiling pot! Real steam is invisible, so the hottest part, right by the spout, is hard to see. Long ago, steam engines used steam to power trains! Sweating is the same trick in reverse. Drying sweat carries heat away, and cools you down.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch steam rise from a kettle or pot, from a safe distance. Look closely, just above the spout. Can you see a clear gap before the white cloud? That clear part is invisible steam! Look, but never touch.

Outro

So steam burns more than water because it carries extra hidden heat, and dumps it all when it turns back into water! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
