Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does sugar dissolve?
The Big Idea
Drop a spoonful of sugar into water, give it a stir, and it seems to vanish! But the sugar isn't gone. You can still taste it! It has dissolved. Say it: dih-ZOLVD. Let's see how water does it.
Surround Sugar
Step one: water molecules surround the sugar. A grain of sugar is a tiny crystal, made of lots of sugar molecules stuck together. When it lands in water, zillions of tiny water molecules crowd all around it.
Pull Apart
Step two: they pull the crystals apart. Water molecules are a little bit sticky, and sugar molecules like sticking to them. So the water tugs sugar molecules off the crystal, one by one, and carries them away. The pieces get too small to see!
Stir and Heat
Step three: stirring and heat help the pull go faster. Stirring brings fresh water to the sugar, again and again. And in warm water, the molecules zoom around faster, and bump the sugar harder. So sugar dissolves quickly in warm tea!
A Closer Look
Let's zoom in super close! Here come the water molecules. They pull the sugar crystal into tinier and tinier bits. Until the sugar molecules are spread all through the water.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! There's a limit! When water can't hold any more sugar, the extra just sits at the bottom. Scientists call that saturated. Say it: satch-uh-ray-tid. Warm water can hold much more sugar than cold water. Salt dissolves in water too, but sand doesn't.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill one cup with cold water, and one with warm water. Stir the same spoonful of sugar into each. What do you notice? Which one dissolves faster?
Outro
So sugar dissolves because water molecules surround it and pull it apart, and stirring and heat make it go faster! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
