Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does chocolate melt in your hand?

The Big Idea

Chocolate can sit in a cool cupboard for weeks, but hold it in your hand, and it gets gooey fast! The secret is a special fat inside chocolate, called cocoa butter. Let's see how it works.

Chocolate Fat

Step one: chocolate fat melts near body heat. Chocolate is full of a special fat called cocoa butter. When it warms up to about thirty-four degrees Celsius, it softens and turns from solid to liquid. That's just a bit cooler than your body!

Body Heat

Step two: your body is about 37°C inside. Your hands are usually a little cooler, around thirty-three degrees, but that's still warm enough to melt some things!

Chocolate Softens

Step three: that's enough to turn solid chocolate soft. Your warm skin passes heat into the chocolate, and the cocoa butter starts to melt. The chocolate turns smooth, glossy, and gooey, right in your hand!

A Closer Look

Let's watch chocolate melt, step by step! First, it's solid and snappy. Then it softens as it warms up. And then it's melted and gooey! It all happens at about thirty-four to thirty-six degrees Celsius.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Cocoa butter just happens to melt right around body temperature. That's why chocolate melts in your mouth! Chocolate comes from the seeds of the cacao tree, called cocoa beans. White chocolate is made from cocoa butter, without the brown cocoa solids. That's why it's pale! Dark chocolate has more cocoa and less sugar than milk chocolate.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Try this simple test. Hold one chocolate square in a cool spoon, and another in your palm. Wait two minutes. Which one melts first? Your warm hand wins! Then, with a grown-up's okay, you can eat your experiment!

Outro

So chocolate melts in your hand because cocoa butter melts just below body temperature. Yum! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
